The seminar was opened by Deputy Social, Wynandin Imawan and moderated by the Director of Population and Employment Statistics, Razali Ritonga. Here are excerpts of an interview with Razali VS Ritonga.

Can you explain what is the life table?

Life Table is a table that contains about mortality data by age are useful for calculating various demographic parameters, such as life expectancy, mortality rude, crude birth rate, and the probability of reaching the age of 40 years.

What is the background of the construction of the life table?

Construction of the life table for two reasons. First, to meet the suggestions of the United Nations, that every country has duly own life table. So far, Indonesia does not have the life table. The second is the life table is one of the outputs of the Census. We already have a population census, on the basis that we follow up to make the life table. Going forward, it is very useful if we develop the life table by type such as by causing disease, new entry labor, and calculate the age of marriage.

Can you tell obstacles encountered in compiling the life table?

The main obstacle is a matter of the quality of the data. Generally from mortality data reported under no such thing, meaning that reported low. Cause, reported mortality is often considered a disgrace or misfortune. So if the baby died there were not reported because of possible embarrassment that the mortality tends to be low. Second, ask mortality data from others because of his deceased be based on reports of others, it also led to under-reported. Ideally for calculating the life table is of population registration. But unfortunately until now we have not had a complete registration. Then the solution of these problems is to improve coverage of the results of SP2010 is by using specific models closer to the truth.

Progress of the construction of the life table until today to where?

Life table has been completed, but still low in terms of quality. In terms of the stage has been completed and all are met. However, for improvements to be used by users need to be followed in the coming years. Preparation of the life table is funded from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Expectations with the construction of the life table?

Given the importance of the life table, we try to spread the ability of calculating the life table to the area. It is expected that the available funding will conduct capacity building, so the region can count itself. The area needs to have the ability to calculate their own because of the area who know the data and field conditions.
